Strategy & Tactics 019 - Blitzkrieg Module

 Lots of optional rules on Blitzkrieg -- which I did not seek to try out.

Strategy & Tactics 018 - Crete

 The magazine has a print and play game - Crete.  I did print it out, but then discovered it was reprinted in issue 75 in full colour, so I got that version out and set it up and played it.

The Germans choose to land almost everything near Maleme airfield, and push for that.  They were making progress, and had some lucky rolls that let them push the allies off the field.  But the allies kept counterattacking, and eventually the Germans got an AE when they were making a desperate attack to clear the airfield again, losing the Germans all apart from 2 units.  At that point it was an overwhelming allied victory.

Strategy & Tactics 017 - Schwerpunkt

 An intriguing set of tank vs tank miniature rules.  I really wanted to try these, but I just dont have time or opponents :(

Strategy & Tactics 016 - Table-Top Wargaming

 An interesting issue -- the magazine is really starting to get going.

Highlights:

Dunnigan on the inability to publish games - "We will try to get many of these published, if only in abbreviated form in S&T"

Gary Gygax advertised a game for sale.

An interview with AH on games publishing.

Virtually nothing on tabletop gaming though!

 

Strategy & Tactics 015 - Trafalgar

An article on the new game - Trafalgar.  Which didnt really excite me.  But it was only $7!

Most notable was a description of a wargames convention run by a Mr Gary Gygax.

Strategy & Tactics 014 - 1914

This issue covered the game '1914'.  I found the coverage really good -- so much that I would have bought the game if I could.  And it was all of $7!!!!

Apparently, S&T almost went bankrupt before this issue.  Financial troubles follow S&T for many years -- I am so glad they didnt go under.  This is still not the magazine it would become -- but it is getting closer!

 

Strategy & Tactics 013

 This was the issue where S&T changed from monthly to every two months -- a format they still use.

The articles were much improved.  But what I found most interesting was articles on counter-insurgency.  I suddenly realised that the Vietnam war was raging as this was being written.

I really enjoyed the article on the Battle of Britain, which was half of the issue.

 Another issue I didnt find that interesting.  However, two articles of interest:

- start of a set of naval rules

- a discussion on Napoleonics, with some interesting looks at basing for 25mm figures and a discussion on how it is hard to get some figures.

Strategy & Tactics 052 - Oil War

 Just me and Andrew, so we got out one of the old classics!  The game is dated, but fun.  And it bought back memories!

 A great article on starting Napoleonics.  Its interesting how much the hobby has changed.

 This was a really interesting issue.  I had never heard of the battle that was the main article.  I recommend this one.

Contains instructions on making your own DIY Sinai wargame.  I must admit not the most memorable issue.

 

Strategy & Tactics 053 - Punic Wars

 Finally got this to the table after about 6 months of trying.  The game hols up, even being well over 40 years old.

Simon crushed me.  Hannibal had a revolt in Spain as the first diplomatic issue.  This weakened his advance into southern France.  Scipio Africanus appeared on the first turn, and attacked Hannibal, who lost and was killed.  It was all downhill from there!

Strategy & Tactics 008 - Diplomacy

Lots of articles discussing variants of Diplomacy -- but no actual variants included.

To me the gold was an article by Donald Featherstone on air wargames.

 

Strategy & Tactics 007 - Patrol

 The issue contains a set of rules for a miniature skirmish.  But to me, the real gold in this issue was a critique of the Fletcher Pratt naval rules by Mr Dunnigan.

Strategy & Tactics 006 - Siege of Bodenburg

Who would have guessed it -- the magazine has a miniatures scenario.  The scenario requires a 1.8m square board, which is too big for my table.  But Lankshnects and Turks skirmishing around a castle looks like good fun!

Strategy & Tactics 005

With an article of Fletcher Pratts naval wargame, this magazine was a fascinating read.  I'm not into the variants the game discusses, and the magazine is still rather short.  But it was a good read!

Strategy & Tactics 004

I cant be sure, but it seems this was shorter than #3.  Most interestingly, it had an article on miniatures terrain!

Strategy & Tactics 003

Read through my downloaded copy of S&T #3.  It wasn't as exciting as the first two issues.  The magazine was more professional -- but somehow the excitement was less.  Could have been me though.

Strategy & Tactics 050 - Battle for Germany

This game is over 40 years old, and I still think its great.  We found some rules holes -- such as who owns Berlin if both the Soviets and Western allies have it in their zone of control.  But it is such a simple but innovative system.  Ross and I declared a draw -- but it was a fantastic game to play!  (We played on Vassal, even though I have the paper version)
